Here is the story of the Romanian plum magiun

The origins of Romanian plum Magiun Magiun is a Romanian dessert, found especially in the Moldavian part of Romania. According to legend, this product originated in Turkey, imported to Romania during the Ottoman conquests around the 15th century. By the way, the word “magiun” comes from the Turkish “macun” which means “paste”.

What is Plum Magiun? The plum magiun comes in the form of a thick paste. It is obtained by slow cooking (between 2 and 6 hours). The traditional magiun recipe has no added sugar and therefore contains only fruit.

Romanian Plum Magiun, a protected designation In August 2009, magiun became the first Romanian natural product protected by an EU label. It is even now used as a replacement for American plum marmalade at all NATO bases. In particular, the magiun of Topoloveni is highly renowned and enjoys a protected designation of origin in a very restricted production area.

How is it eaten? Like a jam. It’s delicious in pancakes, or even simply on toast. It can also be used in pies or donuts. We recommend that you simply try it with a small spoon, to be able to appreciate the full flavor of this unique product. Cooking over low and very slow heat preserves the nutrients of the fruit which would otherwise be destroyed by rapid cooking. We really find the taste of the fruit in this natural product.

Are there variations? Yes! Some make magiun with apples. The best known variation is the magiun of plums with walnuts.
