White wine Feteasca Regala RECAS 2019
Feteasca Regala is a light-skinned grape that can be found throughout Eastern Europe, and particularly in Romania. It is one of three varieties from this part of the world called Feteasca, which means “maiden” in Romanian – the others are Feteasca Alba and Feteasca Neagra, both named for their color (white and black respectively). Regala, on the other hand, means royal, and therefore Feteasca Regala roughly translates to “princess”.
The royal variety is first mentioned in texts from the 1930s and has long been considered an offspring of Feteasca Alba and Grasa de Cotnari. However, it has also been suggested that Francusa and Leanyka are the parents of Feteasca Regala, although this is further confused by the fact that Leanyka and Feteasca Alba may well be the same variety. Whatever its parentage, the variety has found a niche in Romania, where it is today one of the most planted varieties in the country.
Feteasca Regala is widespread throughout central Romania, and in particular in the regions of Dealu Mare and Transylvania. It is well suited to a continental climate, as it can withstand extreme temperatures in summer and winter. It requires abundant rainfall and does not perform well in drought prone areas, and it is susceptible to rot in the Botrytis diet.
Feteasca Regala tends to be richer in flavor than its alba counterpart, as the tannins in the skin of the grapes provide some complexity in wines. Generally speaking, these are aromatic with green apple and tropical fruit characters, and can also be vinified in an off-dry style. Feteasca Regala responds well to aging in oak barrels, which can add complexity to wines. The variety is sometimes also mixed with Muscat Ottonel, especially in milder wines.
The variety is also planted in various other countries of Eastern Europe, including Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. However, there is often no distinction between the different forms of Feteasca, and a white wine labeled “Feteasca” could be Alba, Regala, or a mixture of the two.
